The missing dog

It was Saturday, January 9, 2010. It was Children’s Day in Thailand and celebrations and events were being held in Ubon Ratchathani, just like all round Thailand. Rolo, the dog, took at trip to Tesco Lotus to pick up a few items, with her friend and companion, she knows as Master.

She decided to wait outside and enjoy the nice weather that day, sporting a trendy leash and collar ensemble. Rolo, being a warm and friendly dog enjoys peaceful surroundings and lives a quiet life. So it comes as no surprised that she was spooked when suddenly the high decible sounds of a jet engine roared overhead as it was making low level passes over Ubon as part of Children’s Day festivities. She felt she only had one option, flight. She quickly backed out of her collar and headed at break neck speed for them thar hills. Sadly, she hasn’t been seen since.

Master is heartbroken. He hasn’t slept much since Rolo went missing. They have been companions for 4 years. Master, aka Paul has been putting the word out that he would love to have Rolo back. There have been a few false leads but as of the time of this post, she still hasn’t returned home.

Paul and Rolo need your help. The very much want to be reunited. It will be greatly appreciated if you keep an eye out for Rolo and if you see her, could you contact Paul, his contact information is in the graphic below. Thanks to all.

English language movie at local theaters – It is been quite a while since an English soundtrack movie was offered for viewing here in Ubon Ratchathani. If I recall correctly it has been at least a year.

I enjoy going to a cinema and watching a movie on the big screen from time to time. I happened to check the schedule while passing by Ying Charoen today and was surprised to see a movie showing with its original soundtrack. It is, “Fast and Furious 4″ with Vin Diesel and the cast from the first F&F. I have seen previews and it is fast paced with a lot of visual special effects.

It is also showing at Nevada Entertainment Complex which makes sense because the two theaters share movies.

So if you like to catch a flick sometimes, now is your chance.

Restaurant Alert – Normally I try to offer up the best of Ubon that I experience. However sometimes it is necessary to pass on a bad experience.

On the way to Yasothon on Highway 23 I have passed a restaurant several times. I thought I need to stop by sometime and try out their cuisine.  According to the sign and the name it just might be a shrimp lovers paradise.

I finally had a chance to go there for lunch a couple of days ago. The restaurant is Aw. Kung Pao Branch 13. It is 2-3 kilometers from the  ring road, Highway 231, on the left hand side.

There were only a few customers there so we had a choice of tables. There are several semi-private bamboo huts surrounding a small pond and one large dining area.

The menu was full of shrimp dishes and most were reasonably priced. The food was good, not great, but good and servings were a decent portion. So far so good.

When the bill came the first thing we noticed was we were being billed for a dish we didn’t order. Also there was a charge with no explanation with it. When asked about the extra dish, “oh I’m sorry a mistake”, and when asked about the other charge, “oh that is a charge for cooking the food”.

I am happy to say I have seldom experience this in Ubon. I have once or twice and have other places as well. Usually a group of “farangs” and we got charged extra for everything, air, hand wipe, waitress, ice, etc. I learned quickly. I am not sure if this is  a common practise at this establishment or their intent for doing it, but one thing for sure, that was the first and last time this diner will be a customer there.

Ubon Traveller Assistance

This morning I got up and shaved, a rare occurance. I had a meet and greet scheduled at the Ubon International Airport. The morning Thai Airways Internation flight, TG020, arriving from Bangkok at 07:05. The man I was meeting recognized me immediately. He was friendly and gracious.

The man I met is named Frank. He runs a travel agency out of London. He is married to a Thai lady from the neighboring province of Amnat Charoen. They live together with their children in London.

Frank contacted me through my website WeLoveUbon. He needed some advice to help with a smooth day trip to Ubon. He had two missions to complete during his hours here. He needed to visit a school in Yasothon, to coordinate some humanitarian work. He also needed to visit an ailing member of his wife’s family in a village in Amnat.

The assistance our visiting Brit needed was a rental car with driver and an interpreter/translator. A short five minute phone call to Chow Wattana, a local Ubon car rental service, and the arrangements for a car were completed. Within two days my wife had found one of her students from nearby Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University who was on summer break following his junior year as an English major.

Frank was thrilled to get what he needed. The student, Neung, was thrilled and excited. He got to practise and improve his English skills plus make some extra cash to supplement his salary as a waiter at a local restaurant. I was happy too. It was a good way to start the day.

Ubon Ratchathani House For Rent

I came across this classified for a house for rent here in Ubon. It is very affordable and appears to be in a great location. I called the number on the ad and talked to the owner. He is in Khon Kaen now but has family here that can show the house. I did confirm that the house is still available. His English is sufficient to provide the needed details. If you are in the market for a house visiting his ad and making a phone call might save you a lot of time and energy searching for a nice place to live. P.S. The owner of the house for rent just called me and said he has 8 rai of land with a pond on the road from Ubon to Srisaket. It is near the new Srisaket Tesco Lotus. He would like to rent the land and says it is perfect for a business such as a garden restaurant. If you are interested his contact information is available on the classified ad for the rent house.

Looking for an Ubon local

My blog is included over at Expat-Blog. Occasionally I receive comments and questions through my listing on their site. I was asked for information about any contractors in Ubon who can build a quality affordable house on the owners land. Today I found a comment in the form of a question. Somebody named Becky asked if anybody knows a local Thai name Suwangjit Nudaeng. I don’t know Becky nor the person she is looking for. I also do not know why she is seeking this person. To be on the safe side if anybody knows Suwangjit I would recommend just telling her someone named Becky is looking for her and leave it up to them if want to contact.

During my travels around town I have noticed a few changes here in Ubon.

Closures:

Felice nightclub at Phatumrat Hotel is no longer open for business.

New openings:

E-ba at Laithong hotel is a new nightclub. It has already been open for a few months. It feaures food, drinks and live bands playing contemporary Thai music.

IND Pub at Phatumrat Hotel a small pub beside the now closed Felice. Live music and a DJ.

Ban Lao just north of Montana Hotel where you will find live music, food and drinks.

Sunee Grand Hotel is open with limited operations. 79 rooms are available for accommodation and the ground floor restaurant in the lobby is well worth a night or afternoon out.

City Mall is open at Sunee Tower complex. Presently clothes shopping is all that’s there. More to come later. The supermarket is schedule to open February 7.

Changes:

Cowboys and Indians Pub is closed and will be Fuku, a Japanese restaurant.

Zodiac Pub at Ubon International Hotel had closed its doors and reopened with a new name, Friend Bar. The sign says entertainment is provided by a DJ.

Just a few differences I have noticed in our ever changing city.

This post is just to let you know a few things that have happened and a few things that are going to happen.

• Oliva Italian Restaurant has closed it’s doors for good. This is very disappointing. I enjoyed eating there. The place was small but the food was authentic, the service personable and the environment relaxing. I am thinking maybe their out of the way location might have forced them to close.
• Cozy Restaurant has gone out of business. No more Scandanavian cuisine in town now. This place too might have been a victim of location. They were sandwiched between some other Thai food shops. Also the opening of Nana, Black Canyon and S&P might have had some influence.
• Nok Air will be suspending service to Ubon Ratchathani July 1-31, 2008. No specific reason was given for this stoppage. However, Nok Air is a subsidiary of Thai Airways International and July is peak tourist month in Ubon because of the Candle Festival. Maybe Daddy closed down the service so Thai Airways can get maximum utilization of its capacity.
• There will be Candle Festival activities in Ubon July 1-31, but with the main activities schedule around the full moon so 14-20 July.
• Zodiac Pub at Ubon International Hotel is planning to sponsor an Elvis theme festival to celebrate the life and honor the passing of Elvis Presley. The dates for this event are 16-18 August.

First, the change. Since I first came to Ubon Ratchathani in 1999 Nevada Grand Hotel has been a mainstay here. It was the hotel I stayed at for a few weeks when I was here for a training event with the Royal Thai Army and Royal Thai Airforce. It was the first place I tried to eat som tam so spicy I had to stop due to the fire in my mouth and my sweating would not put it out. I saw my first English language soundtrack movie there in 1999, “The Thin Red Line.”

When I came back to Ubon to live in 2000 I stayed at Nevada Grand Hotel for about a week while looking for an apartment. I used to take my English For Hotel students from Rajabhat there so they could see actual hotel operations. So you see not only does Nevada Grand Hotel have a history in Ubon but I too have a history with Nevada Grand.

Today there is a change. From this point forward the hotel formerly known as Nevada Grand Hotel will be named Ubon International Hotel. I don’t have the details as to why this is happened but it is done. Maybe they were sometimes confused with MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Ubon International Hotel is more search engine friendly and brands them a certain way.

So no more Nevada Grand Hotel, hello Ubon International Hotel. Maybe with the new identity they will offer more English language movies to support that international theme.

Now for the event that will take place in Ubon 31 August until 9 September. Ubon Ratchathani is hosting an international event. The Thai-Indochina Festival is being held here. The location will be at Na Sala Klang, that is in from of the Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Office. The focus of this cultural happening will be local foods. From what I understand the countries that will be participating are Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and one other.

So if you want to sample some cuisine from our neighboring countries head on down to the Provincial Office starting this Friday August 31 and take your taste buds on a Southeast Asian tour.

So that’s it for now. An established Ubon hotel with a new name, Ubon International Hotel and a sharing of surrounding cultures.

Ubon Ratchathani is a good place to live and travel from. You might be surprised at what Ubon and Isaan have to offer and add to your life’s experience.

Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University is looking for native speaker English teacher. You need to know what they are looking for. They want native speakers only due to some complications in getting a work permit. You need to have at least a verifiable Bachelor Degree.

The job will be Monday to Friday 08:30 to 16:30. A standard government university salary and contract are offered. Work hours are 08:30 to 16:30 Monday to Friday and there are some special programs such as Masters you might be asked to teach on weekends. The normal classroom hours will be no more than 15 hours per week.

If you apply and get selected for the position you will be given assistance in getting your visa and work permit. This doesn’t mean they will pay or you will be reimbursed for the costs. It means you will be given the proper documentation to complete these things. Hey, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

I drove my Honda over to the office located on Phalorungrit Rd across from PV Tower apartments in the Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Area Services Center. Turn left through the entrance and there is the Immigration Office at the end of the hallway. I was surprised to see my friend Louie sitting there waiting to get something done about his visa. After greetings Louie informed me that an officer had told him that morning the office would close and cease operations at close of business on August 15. 2007.

This information took me by surprise. When I originally heard that the office had opened I was thrilled. It was very convenient and would save a lot of time. There seems to be a growing expat community here in Ubon and being able to take care of business in town is a good thing for them. There didn’t appear to be a lack of business. I observed 10 people sitting, waiting for their turn to get their immigration matters in order. Also Louie had told me that morning he was there and left because of the crowd. The service was being used.

Now this post is to let the foreign community here in Ubon Ratchathani know about the pending closure. I know many people wait til the last day to get visa extensions or new visas so they can get the max usage from their investment. I hope people don’t show up there on August 17 with a visa that expires that day or over the weekend. If you read this post please inform everyone you know about this so they don’t get caught in a bad position.

Beginning August 16, 2007 all immigration matters will be once again handled exclusively at the Immigration Office in Phibun Mangsahan District located 50km from Ubon City. Back to doing what I have been doing for the 6 years I have lived here, go by car, bus, van or motorcycle to take care of business. Usually it’s a nice trip with the exception of times of flooding during the rainy season. If you have to go there I would recommend lunch down by the river at Gaeng Saphue.

Not only is Ubon affected by this change but I have noticed that people from Srisaket use Immigration Services here too. The foreigners in neighboring provinces might also need to be aware of this.
