Ubon Ratchathani Thai Tourism Fair

July 17th, 2009 · No Comments · ubon event

It is no secret that tourism is down in Ubon Ratchathani as well as in all of Thailand. The same is true in many locations around the awesome planet on which we live.

Welcome to Thai Travel Fest

Welcome to Thai Travel Fest

Some staff at Sunee Grand Hotel and Convention Center got together with Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and organized an event to promote tourism around Thailand mainly for Thai people.

The name of the event is Thai Travel Fest 5 Regions. All five regions are represented Central, Southern, Northern, Eastern and Northeastern or Isaan. The five regions are comprised of a total of 76 provinces. They don’t include the place that is affectionately known as the 77th province, LA, California.

The 17 provinces of Isaan are on display on the ground floor just behind and to the left of the stage pictured above which is in the court area between Sunee Grand Hotel and City Mall.

The remaining 4 regions and 59 provinces are promoting their best on the 5th floor.

The event seems to be a combination of tourism and OTOP. As you walk around the booths some are promoting places, some are promoting hotels and resorts, some are promoting local cuisine and some are promoting local handicrafts.

It is a great way to get an idea of what the rest of Thailand has to offer if you haven’t traveled much in the land of smiles. You can also see the sub-cultures within the Thai culture. There are differences ranging from subtle to drastic.

If you are a traveler you can go shopping for your next vacation or road trip. I discovered several places that piqued my interest like Phayam Island off the coast of Ranong province. A quiet place with bungalows near the beach. It is maintained in a pristine natural environment. The power there is courtesy of our friend the sun.

There is a new resort in neighboring Srisaket named Ban Lan Look Mai. It is set in a rustic setting with a theme of nature and antiques. I thinking to make a run to Srisaket soon.

Amazingly I also ran into several people I know and was surprised to find that some of the staff in booths that promote hotels and resorts I have visited in the past, remembered me.

Of course I had to buy some of the local dishes from other areas. I got home with a dish from the south and another one from the north, Chiang Mai.

It is definitely worth a visit to see what is available to experience throughout Thailand. But you had better hurry. The Thai Travel Fest here in Ubon began today and will be open thru Sunday, July 19. Oh my younger sister’s birthday. Better remind myself to call her.

The hours for the event are 10:00 to 21:00. There are a variety of shows scheduled but I don’t have access to a timetable. All of the shows and presentations will be in Thai. There will be some lovelies preforming traditional Thai dance, if you like that sort of thing.

Go to Sunee Grand Hotel and visit the Thai Travel Fest and get a taste of Thailand. I am intentionally not including many photos in this post because to really appreciate the content you must go see for yourself.

Enjoy what Ubon Ratchathani and Thailand have to offer.
