Ubon Ratchathani is a mid-sized Thai city in the Northeastern or Isaan region of Thailand. It is the largest province in terms of land mass. The influx of travelers to Ubon is not always obvious but they are here, none the less.

My first exposure to Ubon Ratchathani was back in 1999. I was sent here while still active duty soldier to participate in joint training with the Royal Thai Army and Air Force. I got the impression I was in a quiet country town filled with working class people. My first time here the stay only lasted about a week. But I did enjoy myself.

Next visit to Ubon was October 2000. I was out of the military and after a year in the states I decided to spend some time in Thailand. I found a job teaching English here and made it my home. That was 9 years ago and I am still living here.

During the past nine years of living here and with contacts from my website and this blog I have heard a wide variety of reasons for ending up in or passing through Ubon Ratchathani. Often times through mutual agreement the couple will set up a new life together and make Ubon their home.

Other couples in love met elsewhere outside of Ubon and come back here to visit. The foreign half of the relationship is brought back to meet and visit the family and community. The new love gets to participate in traditions and ceremonies and gets an introduction and glimpse into rural village life.

There are also couples who chose to live in the homeland of the foreign half of the partnership. They make trips to Ubon to spend time with family and see how the province has changed. It is not uncommon after retirement for these couples to come live here.

Return To Memories

During the 60′s and early 70′s, Ubon Ratchathani provided bases for soldiers and airmen supporting forces in Viet Nam. Though they were in the military they had a unique opportunity to experience Thai culture and lifestyle.

Many of the soldiers and airmen who were from U.S, UK and Australia made lifelong friends here in Ubon Ratchathani. Not all but some, remembering that special chapter in their life, return to catch up with old friends and see the changes that have occured in the 30 years or so since they left.

I have also come in contact with a few that actually came back her to live either year round or for 6 months a year.

Love

There are a number of foreign residents of Ubon Ratchathani, both male and female, who by some means met and fell in love with a local Ubon resident. Through mutual agreement they decide to come set up a new life together here. The ones I have come in contact with are happy and content with their lives.

Some come here only for visits. The couple met working or traveling outside of the province. They come here so the foreign half of the partnership can meet the family and get a glimpse of rural village life. Usually they will be required to participate in ceremonies and traditions such as the extended family buffet meal.

Another group who come to Ubon due to love are Thai/caucasian couples who decided to live in the western homeland. They travel back home to visit with family, catch up on the latest news and get a dose of Thai culture.

Teach English

I fell into this category originally. I have known and know many expats who come to Ubon specifically to teach at one of the local schools. Some come here by chance, as in it is the place they could find work and were offered a position.

Others chose to come here. They might be tired of life in Bangkok or Chon Buri and want a slower, quieter lifestyle. Also, the cost of living is a lot less in Ubon than in those other areas.

Volunteers or Exchange Students

This is quiet common. Schools out in the rural areas are often quite poor. They look for volunteers to come and teach their students English.

Many of the volunteers will either live at the school or stay with a local family who has volunteered to be their sponsor. It works out for all. The volunteer gets to make a contribution while at the same time getting a unique life experience.

The school gets a good learning experience for their students and an English tutor for the teaches. The village also gets to see how other people outside of Thailand live and think.

Foreign exchange programs place mostly young people not only in schools as students but also positions to live and work in a rural Thai setting. Most travelers I have met in this category are loving it. One reason is the locals treat them like minor celebrities and they find themselves special guests at many parties and other social gatherings.

Thai Buddhism

I have seen reports that Ubon Ratchathani has the highest density of Thai Buddhist Temples in all of Thailand. That might be the reason so many foreigner come here to explore Buddhism on many levels.

Many come to spend time learning. Wat Pa Nana Chat which ws established to educate non-Thai speaking people who want to study Buddhism or possibly become a monk.

Others come here to explore the many temples with their range of stories and architecture.

Muay Thai

Ubon Ratchathani has several highly reputable Muay Thai training facilities, as well as several more that offer a more personalized one on one training. The former offers dormitories and other amenities where as the latter offers the student to live with the trainer and family.

There are always foreigners here participating in Muay Thai training in one level or another.

Miscellaneous

Some people travel to Ubon Ratchathani once a year to participate in the Candle Festival celebration and activities. Others come here to observe first hand life in rural Thailand. Still others come here to natural attractions along the Mekhong.

I have met one man who came here to conduct research and another man from Germany who was using Ubon as a pit stop on his way to Laos.

As you can see there are many reseasons the compel people to travel to Ubon Rarchathani, Thailand. What is your reason?

It is Thursday March 19, 2009 here in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. This post is to provide some interesting things that happened and other information about our Isaan home.

Ubon Traveller Assistance

This morning I got up and shaved, a rare occurance. I had a meet and greet scheduled at the Ubon International Airport. The morning Thai Airways Internation flight, TG020, arriving from Bangkok at 07:05. The man I was meeting recognized me immediately. He was friendly and gracious.

The man I met is named Frank. He runs a travel agency out of London. He is married to a Thai lady from the neighboring province of Amnat Charoen. They live together with their children in London.

Frank contacted me through my website WeLoveUbon. He needed some advice to help with a smooth day trip to Ubon. He had two missions to complete during his hours here. He needed to visit a school in Yasothon, to coordinate some humanitarian work. He also needed to visit an ailing member of his wife’s family in a village in Amnat.

The assistance our visiting Brit needed was a rental car with driver and an interpreter/translator. A short five minute phone call to Chow Wattana, a local Ubon car rental service, and the arrangements for a car were completed. Within two days my wife had found one of her students from nearby Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University who was on summer break following his junior year as an English major.

Frank was thrilled to get what he needed. The student, Neung, was thrilled and excited. He got to practise and improve his English skills plus make some extra cash to supplement his salary as a waiter at a local restaurant. I was happy too. It was a good way to start the day.

Another Ubon Expat Blogger

A shout out to MeMock, another Ubon expat blogger. He contacted me and brought it to my attention that he also has a blog, Life in Rural Thailand, and also made Matt’s list. Why not show MeMock some expat community support and head over to his blog.

Ubon Ratchathani House For Rent

I came across this classified for a house for rent here in Ubon. It is very affordable and appears to be in a great location. I called the number on the ad and talked to the owner. He is in Khon Kaen now but has family here that can show the house. I did confirm that the house is still available. His English is sufficient to provide the needed details. If you are in the market for a house visiting his ad and making a phone call might save you a lot of time and energy searching for a nice place to live. If you are interested just click on over to the ad Ubon House for Rent.

P.S. The owner of the house for rent just called me and said he has 8 rai of land with a pond on the road from Ubon to Srisaket. It is near the new Srisaket Tesco Lotus. He would like to rent the land and says it is perfect for a business such as a garden restaurant. If you are interested his contact information is available on the classified ad for the rent house.

Looking for an Ubon local

My blog is included over at Expat-Blog. Occasionally I receive comments and questions through my listing on their site. I was asked for information about any contractors in Ubon who can build a quality affordable house on the owners land. Today I found a comment in the form of a question. Somebody named Becky asked if anybody knows a local Thai name Suwangjit Nudaeng. I don’t know Becky nor the person she is looking for. I also do not know why she is seeking this person. To be on the safe side if anybody knows Suwangjit I would recommend just telling her someone named Becky is looking for her and leave it up to them if want to contact.

That’s all folks. That’s the way it is, Thursday March 19, 2009 from Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, The Heart and Soul of Isaan.

In my quest to experience as many Ubon hotels and accommodation, I can, I spent the recent New Year holiday there.

If you are coming through the town of Khong Jiam you turn left just across the Mun River. If you are coming from Sirinthon heading north to Khong Jiam you turn right just before the bridge. You would not expect to find much down this road, by the scenery. On the right is a National Park and on the left are scattering small buildings. Just after cross a small bridge a bit more than 2 kilometers into the road you will see a grouping of signs prompting you to turn left for Tohsang Khong Jiam Resort.

You still will not feel like you are close to anything, but soon you see the entrance to the accommodation. It looks like not much more than a facade, but in fact it is the resort lobby. It is a small lobby containing only the reception area and a small gift shop. You will be greeted by the staff and offered a nice welcome drink.

After checking in you are ushered through an opening opposite the entrance. You are greeted by a designer wall that provides a bit of privacy for the swimming pool on the other side. A walkway that is there as well and if you turn right will lead you to the villa rooms and turn left leads to the deluxe and superior rooms.

The rooms are housed in two 3-story buildings between the front wall the Mekhong River. The doors are all facing a garden area and windows facing the scenic river. Superior rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floors on both ends of the two buildings. What makes them different and more valuable are the sun decks. Here you can sit on the lounge chairs and sunbathe, take in the view, read or just relax.

Inside the room you will find a large comfortable bed seemingly covered in pillows, a wall mounted plasma TV, riverside view completely windows, mini bar and room safe. The bathroom features a separate stand up shower, a bath quite comfortable for me but might not be the same for a professional basketball player. The room experience is enhanced by a peaceful room decor. The only thing that breaks the river view is the trees which provide shade to your room against the afternoon setting sun.

Outside again exploring the facilities, first was the swimming pool. It is small and 1.5 meters deep. There are lounge chairs surrounding the deck. Directly, behind the pool is the restaurant, Cafe De Terrace. It offers opening air dining on a deck overlooking the river. There is also an enclosed section for those days when it is raining or cold. Moreover, some might not enjoy eating in the great outdoors.

The menu is varied, containing both Thai and Western dishes. The food is good quality, tastes great, presented well and reasonable priced. My experience with the staff was they were friendly and helpful. Two waiters who served us several times, Mom and Chang, always wore a smile and were anxious to use and improve their English skills.

My one disappointed with the restaurant was the evening entertainment. For me it was poor quality, something akin to a karaoke. I would have preferred taped music, a DJ or silence. It seemed very much out of place at a quality resort.

Walking through the restaurant you will pass a gift shop that offers clothing and other items. They are Thai silk mostly and made there locally. Beyond the gift shop is the spa, you can get relaxing Thai, foot or aroma therapy massages for relatively cheap compared with other spas where I have stayed.

The Garden Terrace is where the breakfast buffet is served. Each morning you get a choice of continental, American, Thai and Kai Grata. Of course also available are the usual suspects of drinks, coffee, tea, water, orange juice, grape juice and Bolan (Black coffee or coffee Lao).

At the end past the Garden Terrace, the villas are situated. They are few in number but all have an unobstructed view of the river. Besides the view they offer more space, more privacy and a deck to enjoy your meals at your room or just to relax.

Tohsang Khong Jiam Resort is not large, but it is in a great location and offers a peaceful atmosphere. It is great for a weekend away from Bangkok or whatever city you are living in. There are cheaper accommodations in Khong Jiam but if a hotel adds resort to the end of its name you can have greater expectations. You can expect to pay more, have a more relaxing environment and great service. Tohsang Khong Jiam Resort in Khong Jiam district Ubon Ratchathani province can meet such expectations.

You are invited to a Christmas party at Suan Loong Daeng. The dinner on Christmas eve will consist of lamb, pork, turkey and more. Come enjoy the holiday in a natural setting environment.

I didn’t hesitate to make the decision to go. Trond had invited me before but for whatever reasons I never did make it there. I was soon to discover it had been my loss.

We arrived around 1:30pm and were promptly greeted by a member of the staff. After checking the name, I was directed to the most convenient parking area. Within a few moments Trond magically appeared down a path and gave the grand tour.

The room choices are guesthouse or bungalow. We chose a bungalow. The bungalows at Suan Loong Daeng are small but more than adequate. The rooms are clean with a roomy bed, ceiling fan and private bath. It was nice to see such a place in Ubon Ratchathani that compliments the natural surroundings.

Since it seemed we were among the first to arrive we did a little exploring. It was like being out in a jungle. I could easily see why it was referred to as a Farm Stay. A visit to the restaurant bar for some liquid refreshment than back to the bungalow for a power nap in preparation for the evenings festivities.

Around 6pm it was back to the restaurant to await the holiday meal and meet the other guests. It turned out to be a truly international gathering, Norwegians, Swedes, Brits, Aussies, Thais and a lone Yank.

Some interesting conversations commenced and shortly we were called to be seated at the dinner table. The meal began with a special homemade pate, I haven’t eaten much pate in my life but I must say it was delicious. When our host brought out the dinner plate it was like a platter to be shared.

Enjoying the dinner was a process. Most had to eat some, take a break, the eat some more. During the dinner we were serenaded by a local trio. The play list was mostly Thai country songs but it fit the mood quite well. No Christmas carols or Santa Clause but all the guests were still festive and joyous.

Cold beer, good music, good food, good friends, who could ask for much more. People from several nationalities enjoying life and enjoying the season. No flag flying, politics or religion, just genuine socializing and making the most of the moment.

The staff, who were like family, gladly made doggy bags for those of us who couldn’t finish what was on our plates. The remainder of the evening was filled with pool playing, talking, singing, dancing and having a good time.

It was truly a unique Christmas celebration for me. I have spent Christmases in many places throughout the US, Germany, Korea and Thailand. I will remember this one.

In the morning it was nice to awaken to peace and quiet. Coffee and breakfast in the fresh Isaan country air was a good way to start Christmas Day. There was no snow,no tree with presents beneath but Trond, Nok, staff and guests were family and provided gifts in the form of great memories.

Trond and Nok definitely over delivered. The holiday has passed and if you didn’t attend you missed it but Suan Loong Daeng is still there and you are welcome to visit anytime. If you are in Ubon Ratchathani or just looking for a place to get away you might consider a trip to Nam Yuen to check it out for yourself.

Ubon Ratchathani is part of a big, big world. The world is not getting any smaller, but it is getting more accessible. I can sit here in Ubon and have friends that I can communicate with instantaneously and mostly free.

I don’t know if you know of Twitter. I might be the only person in Ubon who is using Twitter. It is a mini-blogging platform where you can send and receive messages 140 characters at a time. It is something like a chatroom but you pick and choose who you whose messages you read and who follows you to read your messages.

It’s a great way to connect and network. What does that have to do with Ubon? A week or so ago someone named everywheretrip started following me, (I get notified by email). I checked him out and ended up on an interesting blog and an interesting story.

Gary Arndt, an American, one day decided to put all his earthly possesions in storage and head out to travel around the world and document it. Something like “1000 Places To See Before You Die”. Quite an undertaking you must agree. Gary, though, is doing all this on his own. The only cameras following his journey are his own. You won’t see him on Discovery Travel & Living or National Geographic Channel. At least not yet.

Mr Arndt, documents his travels through a lens and also via his blog, Everything-Everywhere. It is really quite interesting with photos and stories from all over the world and being added to daily. Last I checked Gary was next door in Viet Nam, but will be passing through our cherished Thailand soon.

In an effort to increase his readership Gary is sponsoring a contest throughout the month of November. All you have to do is visit his blog and sign up for blog post updates via RSS or email. So hop on over to Everything-Everywhere and join Gary’s contest. No visa required.

Prizes for the contest are souvenirs Gary has picked up on his quest. I have to admit I was a bit envious as I traveled through the blog. It’s possible to see memories as well as dream. Head on over and say hello to Gary, if you can catch him.

That is one way I can connect to the world exploring here in Ubon Ratchathani.

Not long ago we made a weekend trip to Khong Jiam district of Ubon Ratchathani. It is the easternmost point of Thailand and Ubon Ratchathani. It is framed by the Mekong River, or Mae Nam Kong to the east and Mun River to the south.

Being there make me think I had entered a time machine and went back in time maybe 40 years. Life is lived at a slow pace. Traffic is sparse with the near total absence of the high-pitched whine of small cc motorcycles.

Children on bicycles ride around the streets playfully yelling at their friends and laughing a lot while their pet dogs ran along behind them.

I had some free time as my wife was busy fulfilling her duties and obligations at the English Camp. I was out and about doing what comes natural and I enjoy very much, exploring and experiencing.

After 15 minutes of walking I found a place to get some breakfast. It was the local market down on the main street. It seems to be the place everybody in town socializes in the mornings. Looking around it appeared I was the only farang in the vicinity.

A good breakfast in my stomach I headed off in the general direction of the Mekong River. It came into view 10 minutes later. I found myself beside the Thai Customs house, which was at the top of the steep riverbank fronting a market.

The slopes of the riverbank was dotted with people carrying goods up and down. From the long tail boats docked at the riverside goods and agricultural items were carried to customs and the market beyond. From the market goods were carried down to the boats emptied of their Laotian goods. I could only image that the exact scenario was being played out on the Laos side of the river as well.

This must be what free-trade is all about. People trading excess goods they have to others who need them and in turn getting goods they need in return. Maybe a good portion of our world has it wrong and this is how things should work.

I spotted a small bamboo kiosk with a sign advertising coffee that was calling me. With the approval of the vendor I took the hot coffee in a porcelain cup and sat on a bench overlooking the river. As I sat taking in the sights and sipping my coffee, a small dog came and sat in front of me. I looked around and didn’t see anyone who might be with him. He looked as though he could use a pet or two so I scratched behind his ears.

The dog sat there for a few minutes staring up and me and then squeezed between my legs and layed down under the bench I was sitting on. Maybe it was his place on the river. But he seemed happy enough to share with a curious farang.

Looking around at my surroundings, I saw people who looked comfortable and secure. It must be a good feeling having the mighty Mekong constantly in view. It made them know they are at home. I tried to experience that feeling as I turned my focus back to the river.

What came to my mind is that even though the Mekong appears to be constant it is constantly changing. This river full of history and ghosts is never the same from moment to moment. The muddy water I see now will be a ways down stream by the time I take another sip of coffee.

When I was sitting there the waters of the monsoon had long been gone. Out in the river islands were visible. A big difference during the rainy season when the waters would end a few meters from where I was sitting.

The waters of this river started their journey far to the north. There are many ways each drop of water found its way to be part of the mighty river for a short time. Some came from melting snow, some came from rains, some came from other lesser rivers connecting to the Mekong as part of a network of waterways.

The water flowed without thought, crossing borders without need for passport, visa or documents. No taxes were levied on any water that was part of the river. Some of the water would pass through Laos and Viet Nam, doing its part to resupply the South China Sea. Some water would be used for irrigation, some water would be drank by buffalo or dogs.

The cotton-ball looking clouds might have been formed from water that was previously part of this river. Even though the Mekong is a comforting and familiar sight, it is constantly changing. But for the residents I am sure it has forever been and forever will be the same.

I was mesmerized by the scene and my thoughts but I got an internal nudge to move on. As I got up from the bench I had occupied my new friend gazed at me with those sad puppy eyes and said not a word. I slowly meandered over and returned the coffee cup, when I came back to the bench on the pathway my K-9 friend had left. Maybe he just wanted to share the moment.

The brick path along the top of the bank runs from the customs house south to the Mun River. In sections it is lined with shops and restaurants. Down in the water are two floating restaurants and long tail boats you can hire for a ride on the river.

It had been a peaceful relaxing morning and a satisfying time. But now I had to head back to the guesthouse and meet my wife for lunch and to checkout in preparation for returning to Ubon Ratchathani.

I enjoyed my visit to Khong Jiam. It is a wonderful place for reflection and relaxation. Try it, you might just like it.

The alarm went off at 5A.M.. I quickly rolled out of bed and threw on some shorts and a T-shirt. Out on the deck the night lights were on but the darkness still bathed the landscape in thick blackness.

I wasn’t sure what time the sun was due to come up so I made sure I was ready. Many signs noted that this was the easternmost point in Thailand, thus would be the first to see the sunrise. I had been to Khong Jiam before but only on day trips so this was my first chance to view the sunrise over the Mekong and Mun Rivers.

Still cloaked in darkness at 5:30A.M. and peaceful except for the distant gurgling of a longtail engine. With no light I could have been anywhere. The first dim lumination was apparent at 5:45. Some trees were visible on the opposite shore though the river was still a black hole. Ting, my wife, finally joined me so we could enjoy the sunrise together.

There it was, a red fireball rising out from behind the treeline. The scenic view coming in to focus told me that I was in fact in Khong Jiam on the banks of the Mun River. Morning had come to Thailand. The waters of the Mun River were making their way to join the waters of the mighty Mekong. Local fishermen were making their way to their old and worn flatbottom long boat to begin their daily rituals. Me, I was taking in the scene beside my wife and experiencing that tourist tradition of enjoying the point of the earliest sunrise in Thailand.

This all took place at Pak Mool(pronounced – pak moon) Guesthouse in Khong Jiam district of Ubon Ratchathani province in the Isaan region of Thailand. It is a quiet and peaceful place a stones throw from Laos. I found the short time I stayed there very relaxing. It was hard to find anyplace open early in the morning for coffee and breakfast but it didn’t seem to matter much.

The guesthouse was only 500 Baht per night, which included a room with a bed, air-conditioning, TV and hot water for a shower. Well worth it. No breakfast included and in fact the guesthouse didn’t even appear to have a kitchen. Food can be found close by, but not until a time after the sun comes up.

A very laid back village. Not a lot of movement, not a lot of noise. I highly recommend visiting there. If you are on vacation it’s a nice place to relax, if you live in Ubon it’s a nice place to get away from the city. A 2 hour drive or ride from Ubon city but maybe a 20 year trip back in time. Take some time and enjoy the sunrise and peacefulness of Khong Jiam.

There’s a new bird in town now servicing Ubon Ratchathani. Now we have a choice of three airlines for our trips to and from Bangkok. Nok Air has two daily flights from Bangkok to Ubon and Ubon to Bangkok. It seems they are expanding into Isaan. Nok Air is a subsidiary of ThaiAirways International. It is their version of a “no frills” airline.

Nok Air offers an early morning flight and a late evening flight. Their hub is Don Muang Airport in Bangkok so it makes it a lot more convenient and quicker to get into Bangkok city than from Suvarnabumi Airport. Here is their flight schedules:

Bangkok To Ubon

Flight DD9310 departs BKK 06:20 arrives Ubon 07:30

Flight DD9318 departs BKK 19:55 arrives Ubon 20:05

Ubon To Bangkok

Flight DD9311 departs Ubon 07:55 arrives BKK 09:00

Flight DD9319 departs Ubon 21:30 arrives BKK 22:35

It is comparable to Air Asia in service but you do get reserve seating. You can make reservations online, purchase your tickets and choose your seating. You can even check-in by phone but you must do this prior to 2 hours before the flight. You can only use phone check-in if you have no checked baggage. Also for some reason you don’t get the flight insurance if you check-in by phone.

They still seem to be working out the kinks. Check-in was suppose to close 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure time but at 25 minutes there were still 20 people in line waiting to check in.

Don Muang is a skeleton of it’s former self. Not near the traffic as before. There are a few restaurants open there but only in the terminal. Once you enter the passenger waiting there is nothing. So eat before you enter. No city buses from Don Muang now but there is a bus to Suvarnhabumi Airport.

The fares are reasonable the the price fluctuates. It seems to be driven by supply and demand. I think it is also effected by the day of the week. If you are planning to travel and you see a good fare you should grab it. I was planning my travel and there was a good rate in the morning but when I decided to go with Nok Air in the evening the ticket price had gone up by 300 Baht.

All in all I was satisfied with the service. The flight times aren’t ideal but that is a small thing. If you are coming to Ubon Ratchathani or going from here to Bangkok I would recommend you give Nok Air a try.

They have a website in English you can visit them at Nok Air.

Stories about a place give it personality and mystery. I am always interested in a good story. I am not sure where to find stories about Ubon yet but I keep looking. I have been learning that Ubon has a long a diverse history. This area has been home to Khmer, Lao, Japanese, American, British, Australian and Thai. They have all left a part of who there were here and everything has added to the identify of the land and the people. Though it’s hard to see any trace of the original influences.

Researching Ubon could prove to be a lifelong project. That’s fine, it’s a passion and quite fulfilling. I ran across this story a few days ago. It was on a blog about Baby Boomers by a guy named Howdy. I contacted him and requested permission to republish it on this blog. He gave me permission and his blessing. It’s an interesting story with a beginning but now ending. I thought maybe is people read it in Ubon or had lived here maybe somebody would see something familiar and maybe give an ending to the story. Following is the original blog post:

“HOWDY’S ADVENTURES IN THAILAND – PART II
Like my first adventure story in Thailand, this one is also the truth – well, mostly anyway…

________________________________________________

Jeremy was in love with a Thai National lady named, Dami.

She was for sure a pretty lady and lots of guys were after her; including Jeremy and a Thai Air Force guy who was stationed on the same base with us there in Ubon. The word around was that Dami was much too involved with the TAF guy and Jeremy was being used mainly just to provide her with things she wanted from the BX, the Air Force’s on base GI department store.

One day, as Jeremy sat in the Day Room (kind of our squadron party room) after hours talking with Dami, he heard a loud noise outside the door. When he turned to see what was happening, he found several Thai Air Force personnel standing around him with guns aimed at his head.

Geesh, what do you do at a time like this!

Luckily for those guys, God was looking out for them that day. Cause Jeremy ‘n me would have whooped the Thai Air Force from one side of the base to the other! (I mean, had I been there, that is). Cause Jeremy ‘n me had taken karate together there in Thailand and no one was about to take us down… nobody! ; ) Yep, lucky for them guys!

The U.S. Air Force Security Police had seen the Thai Air Force truck go barreling down the road on the wrong side of the base and they followed to see where they were going.

Quicker than Jeremy could say his last prayer, the U.S. Security Police surrounded the Thai Air Force with their weapons and backed them down. They left without anyone getting hurt; at least this time.

Jeremy was stationed in Thailand with me and was supposed to return to the states before I did. However, he decided to stay behind and see if he could win the hand of his truly beloved, Dami.

I never heard from my friend, Jeremy, again after I left Ubon to return to the states. I hope he was able to win Dami’s hand and see his dreams come true. ~Howdy “

I hope you enjoyed to story. If you think you might have any information as to the romance of Jeremy and Dami or (Tami) please contact and let me know. But if you have no idea this was a part of Ubon Ratchathani history for you to enjoy. A story without and ending.
