This identifies Lily Restaurant

Maybe you’ve been out to Huai Wang Nong, a man-made pond just  east of Ubon Ratchathani airport.  Not long ago it was mostly deserted but now it is home to an ever increasing number of restaurants, resorts and homes.

One of the newest eateries is Lily Restaurant and Bar. A prodigal daughter of Ubon and her Swedish husband return to Isaan after 20 years away. Most of the time was spent in Phuket but they also lived in Sweden for a few years.

As part of their new life back in Ubon Ratchathani they decided to open a business out at Huai Wang Nong. The decision to use a new restaurant as the foundation anchoring them at home was easy, as they had operated an shop while in Phuket.

They named the new restaurant, Lily, for no reason other than they like the name. I further gave it the name, Lily On The Pond.  It is a small quiet place that has the privilege of being near the water each and every day.

The offerings on the menu at Lily are mostly Thai dishes. However, there are several westerner selections as well. Lily Restaurant might be the only place you can find Swedish meatballs in Ubon. Along with the meatballs you can also find Fish & Chips, Cordon Bleu, Steaks and an assortment of salads.

The promise the proprietors will make to you is you will get good food at a reasonable price. The environment will be clean and pleasant. You can enjoy the view of the pond while you enjoy your lunch or dinner with your companions.

Lily Restaurant in Ubon is open daily from 11:00 to 23:00. It is small open air structure, nicely decorated. There are tables outside as well if you prefer.

There is no public transportation that runs at Huai Wang Nong so when you drop by Lily you will need your own transportation or get a taxi or tuk tuk. Two songtaew lines run close but walking would be required.

I have eaten there several times and always enjoyed my meals. You should go enjoy a lunch or dinner there soon. Try out the menu and say hello to welcome some new Ubon Ratchathani residents.

UPDATE: Michael and Joy have closed Lily Restaurant and Bar temporarily for some new building construction. I was told it will be closed around 4 months. I will keep you posted as I receive new information.

Ding, ding, ding, ding. What’s that noise? Ohhhhhhhhhh, the alarm clock. I am in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. So much for my anticipated lunch at a small Italian restaurant in Italy.

The dream was interrupted but I found out I was in luck if I want to dine on an authentic Italian meal here in Ubon. Franco, an Italian expat here in Ubon, opened Spago Italian Pizza and Pasta Restaurant.

I drove up along  busy Chaeng Sanit Road to the north end across from Home Mart and made a u-turn to the to Chaeng Sanit Road south. The front of Spago was blocked by double parked cars of customers waiting for their take home orders. Luckily I was driving my motorcycle and was able to get prime parking on the sidewalk right in front.

The storefront being concealed by vehicles might be a common occurrance so it might be a good idea to look for the sign until you know the location by heart.

I walked in the front doors and was immediately greeted by Franco’s smile and his inevitable days-growth beard. Then my eyes were drawn to the genuine brick pizza oven. It is facing the storefront perhaps intentionally to draw the attention of passers by.

It was early and only a few customers were sitting around. They were all Thais waiting  for take home orders. The tables were all nicely spaced and covered with checkered table cloths. I could see a good mix of seating for groups of two to six.

The walls are adorned with several bigger than life post card like decorations. All are scenes from, where else, Italy. The color scheme is soft European style pastels. No bright, loud, psychodelic colors to be found here. I commented on how nice the place looked but Franco remarked, “It’s okay”, giving the impression his feeling is things can always be improved.

I took my seat at a table near the window. The dinner menu was politely offered by a new and a bit timid and shy waitress. I suspect that, not only is she new to the job but also new to serving foreigners. I have been in positions like that before and knew a bit of patience and understanding are called for. It is a new culture serving western style in a western restaurant.

What to order? The menu is 100% Italian. I read through the selections of antipasto, pizza and pasta before choosing lasagna and Spago pizza. After ordering dinner a drink menu appeared and this meal called for a small cold Heineken.

There is a wine list on the drinks menu but I have never been much of a wine drinker. Most of the wine I ever drank was in my partying days and no corkage was required as the bottles were opened by a few twists of the cap. I will have to leave it up to wine lovers to read and choose the wines.

The lasagna came centered in a square baking dish. It was bigger and taller than I expected. Its a good thing I was hungry. The waitress appeared again bearing extra cheese and a pepper grinder. She bravely but awkwardly began adding pepper but was saved and watched intently as she was getting some on the job training.  I am sure in no time at all she will be a pro at delivering fresh ground pepper.

I was startled when the pizza arrived. This being Thailand I was expecting a small personal size pizza. But the pizza sitting before me was much larger than I thought. After close inspection I realized the pizza crust was not much more than paper thin. Its purpose was to hold the ingredients and sauce. This pizza is about the flavor from the blend of herbs, spices and toppings and not on filling up on the crust.

It was a chore to get through the meal, though a very pleasant one. My palette and stomach were both totally satisfied but I was there and wanted to try the Tiramasu. If you order this desert expect to wait a few minutes while fresh ground cocoa is used to top the dish like a new fallen snow. I was pleased with the tiramsu and its freshness and subtle flavor.

Franco stopped by during a cooking break and asked about things.  He explained about the Tiramasu and brought out the special Italian cheese he uses that must be ordered from Bangkok. He also asked me if I had ever tried Crappo or Grappo, an Italian liquor. I had never even heard of it so I gave it a shot. When it arrived I downed the shot and noticed a familiar yet unique taste. Cheers.

In the course of enjoying a good meal, others came in to do the same. I found myself sitting in a truly international environment. This could have been in Europe, Australia, USA or even Italy. Along with the Thai staff of 5 or so, there were a couple of Thai customers, a Brit, a man from Ireland, another gent from Germany, the Italian chef and an American. It was interesting too because in my gene or DNA cocktail I have German, Irish and Native American blood. Is it possible Thais are somehow related to native Americans?

Unlike the dream, in reality one must pay for dining experiences. The cost is really quite reasonable given the quality of the food. I always expect to pay a bit more if needed ingredients are imported. Just part of the price we pay to live here in Thailand.

There is now Italian blood flowing through the heart of Ubon Ratchathani. I am glad Franco came out of retirement and decided to share his culinary skills, experience and talent with those of us who live and visit Ubon Ratchathani.

I highly recommend next time you are dining out, either for lunch or dinner to give Spago Italian Pizza and Pasta Restaurant in Ubon Ratchathani.

Sitting at home drinking coffee is cheaper and often more comfortable. You don’t have to get dressed, drive anywhere, wait for your coffee, find a place to sit or listen to music and conversations you would rather not.

But sometimes you find a secret place that is a jewel and makes it worth doing all the above just to enjoy a good cup of coffee.

There is a small section at the west end of Tahan Road in Warin  sandwiched between Sathani Road and Sathit Nimankan Road. If you glance down it there will seem to be nothing of interest. But if you like coffee and a lovely environment it might be worth your time to look a bit closer.

In the middle of that block on the north side of the street is a shop with an old wooden facade. You might not take a second look even if you are walking past but that would be your loss. There is a sign in Thai, framed by plants that reads, “Pantae“. It is the name given by those who started this place 2 years ago.

When you walk through the front door and look around you might think you pass through a time warp or entered an antique shop. Though there are many antiques that is not the business, just a passion of the owner. You will see televisions that have no idea what a remote is. In their day they required you to get up and walk to them to change the channel. They only offered two colors, black and white.

When you pull yourself away from the antiques and look further you will find yourself being greeted by a warm smiling face with a voice that can speak English in addition to Thai and a few other languages.  She will be happy to take your order there or you can find a table and decide what  you want.

Inside you will see tables set amongst the antique collections. Maybe you will want to sit next to the display of telephones with rotary dials and get a few laughs and maybe recall a few memories.

When you are ready to order you can select one of their coffee drinks which include Americano, Cappuccino, espresso and come either hot or cold.  Or maybe you would prefer tea instead of coffee. You can order it there. If you aren’t into caffeine in any form you might desire a cool fruit smoothie.

Besides drinks there is a small selection of bakery goods if you are experiencing a sweet tooth during your visit.

If it’s a nice day you might want to see outside. After you pass through all the antiques and exit through the back door you will find yourself in a jungle-like garden setting. This was created by the owner to showcase his other passion, gardening.

There are ferns and other plants hanging around. I have no idea the names of any of them. But I do know it is the only coffee shop I have seen with anything remotely like this. The are about 4-5 tables nestled and semi-hidden amongst the greenery. If gives a feeling of privacy and seclusion even though there might be customers at the other tables.

As you are sitting there enjoying the ambiance, drinking your coffee or whatever you are having, and talking with your friend,  you will hear music, but not so loud that you have problems hearing your friend speak in a low voice.

Sitting there amongst the ferns and other plants you get a good feeling, relaxed and thinking, “all is right with the world”.

Pantae Coffee Shop is open 10:00 to 22:00 everyday except Wednesday. On Wednesday the staff spends their day relaxing and enjoying with their family and friends.

You can also get a cold beer at Pantae. As of yet, they do not serve food but if you like the environment I am sure if you ask it will be no problem to bring in some take out food and eat while enjoying a cold beer, the music and the vegetation that will surround your table. Oh yeah, I should mention you can also bring your notebook along, Pantae has wifi available for its patrons.

I was fortunate enough to discover Pantae from the old fashion marketing method, word of mouth. Nescafe Restaurant has been open in Ubon serving the morning crowd for a number of years. It is another simple eatery that is somewhat narrow in its menu. But for the many times I have been there myself and the other patrons go away happy and satisfied.

Nescafe Restaurant takes its name from what I believe is the biggest distributor of instant coffee in Thailand. It is everywhere. Present day there is a selection but even 14 years ago all one could find was Nescafe. In the mornings if I wanted coffee and wasn’t staying at a larger hotel I had to set out and find a 7 eleven to get a cup of Nescafe.

Though Nescafe is the name of this restaurant it serves breakfast as well. To make things easy and quick they offer a set menu. Here too you can find 4 western style breakfast dishes, as well as Kai Grata, Jok, Khao Dtom and even soft-boiled eggs with toast.

I decided to end this series with another local breakfast favorite, Jok. For those that don’t know Jok is basically rice porridge seasoned for taste and some meat and egg added for protein.

My wife ordered Khao Dtom or boiled rice. Like Jok, it is seasoned for flavor and if you want meat and egg can be added.

The meat in the Jok is liver and lemon grass is added to dilute the strong flavor. You can choose from pork, chicken or fish. I like to add some chili powder and I am good to go. One bowl of jok will fill you up and make you ready for a day of activity.

If you want something more they have small rolls with sausage and Ba Tawngno as well.

For drinks, of course you can get Nescafe coffee, but also there are some tea drinks and orange juice.

Again this is reasonably priced breakfast. Khao Dtom and jok are 25-30 Baht per serving. The dish of Ba Tawngno is included with Jok, other pastry around 10 Baht each. For the drinks 20 Baht for orange juice and teas 15 Baht.

The shop is small but comfortable with tables inside as well as on the sidewalk. Looking around you will see newspapers at virtually every table giving the impression people come here to eat and catch up on news before beginning their work day.

The staff is friendly and actually the manager or owner came by the table to say hello and ask who we are doing and is everything okay. This was done with a warm smile.

Nescafe is located on the corner of Srinarong Rd and Ratchawong Rd a couple of blocks east of the main Ubon Ratchathani Post Office.  Another restaurant for you to choose from when it’s time for breakfast in Ubon Ratchathani.

Dao Coffee Ubon Ratchathani

Today I chose Dao Coffee. The shop is built up around the famous Dao coffee from Laos. This coffee shop, which also offers breakfast meals is located on Chongkhon Nithan Rd between Phalo Rangrit Rd and Surasak Rd. Across the street is the Ubon office of Dao Coffee.

The shop is small but it is a specialty shop. There is open floor plan indoor seating as well as some seats outside.  The menu is waiting on the table in a heavy wooden frame.  Everything is a set and simple. The menu is in Thai but you can easily make a selection based on the photos.

If you want eggs for breakfast there are 4 sets to choose from, eggs with sausage (hot dogs), eggs with ham, omelet with meat and Kai Grata. The egg sets come with fresh breakfast roll. Also on the menu is Jok, Khao Dom and Guay Jap.  You can also try a pate sandwich. I think this comes from the French influence in Laos.

Drinks include a variety of juices and coffee drinks such as latte, espresso, capuchino and mocha.

After you order you don’t have to wait long for your meal to arrive. So you can enjoy in the pleasant surroundings.

When I spent the night in one of the Sunee Grand Hotel rooms it was newly opened and occupancy was very low. The breakfast buffet was in the plans but waiting for enough guests to make it worthwhile.

The breakfast buffet at Ruen Sunee is from 06:00 til 10:00 every morning. The cost is 150 Baht per person if you are not a guest at the hotel. For hotel guests it is included in the room rate.

As it is a buffet you can eat your fill of whatever you choose. Some of the layout includes the usual breakfast buffet selections fresh fruit, breads, juice, coffee and tea. And of course you can have eggs cooked to order or if you prefer guay jap.

There were some things I have never seen in a breakfast buffet before, spaghetti and chicken soup. For the meat lovers there are ham and sausage to go with your eggs.

There is also a selection of Asian dishes such as Jok, Khao Dtom and fried rice. The quality of the food is good and there is plenty of it.

If you enjoy a wide selection for breakfast and the buffet atmosphere this would be the place for you to go in the mornings for breakfast in UbonRatchathani .

Have you ever tried a liquid breakfast? Not the kind I had occasionally in my younger days but a healthy breakfast.

One day I was walking through Nevada Entertainment Complex checking the movie schedule and noticed a new shop, the sign read Healthy Breakfast. It was afternoon and closed. One the door it gave the business hours as 07:00 to 12:00.

The next time I was in the area in the morning I stopped by and talked to the owner. I thought it was a local entrepreneur who got a great idea for a specialty breakfast shop. But now I know it is a franchise created and sponsored by HerbalLife.

In addition to this  shop at Nevada Complex there is also at least one more in Ubon. It is located downtown on Sapphasit Rd next door to Indochine Restaurant a few hundred meters east of Phadaeng Rd.

There is one item on the menu. A protein and fruit drink. The good things you have to choose from to add to your protein are green beans, black sesame seeds, red beans, brown rice, and a few other items that I couldn’t translate to English. You can select what you want, all, a few or none. It is up to you.

An Ubon Ratchathani Healthy Breakfast

You get a large 500ml glass with your breakfast filling it to the 500ml mark. It takes only a few minutes as it is prepared only after you order. The drink comes with a companion drink of another HerbalLife product. The taste is ok but if you choose this for your healthy breakfast in Ubon it is not about pleasing your palette.

If you just order a single drink it is a bit pricey at 120 Baht. But if you plan to frequently visit the shop for breakfast or mid morning snack you can purchase a plan that cuts the cost to 90 Baht per drink.

This is a great alternative for health conscious diners or for those whose doctor recommends a change of diet. So if you want a healthy breakfast in Ubon Ratchathani you might want to visit Healthy Breakfast down at Nevada Entertainment Complex at Ubon International Hotel.

For the most part what we eat is determined by a variety of influences. Where we live and the climate determines what grows and lives in our part of the world.  Culture also helps determine what is on our menu as well as religion and society.

In North America there is some rice grown but the main dish is potatoes. It is also widely eaten in Europe and Scandinavia. But here in Ubon we are deep in rice country and so it comes as no surprise that rice and things made with rice are a mainstay in my adopted home of Ubon Ratchathani.

Jae Nueang Traditional Vietnamese Guay Jap

Today I visited a small shop on Phalochai Rd. It is about 100 meters west of Bordin Hotel and across the street from Wat Chai Mongkhon. The shop’s name is Jae Nueang. Their specialty is traditional Vietnamese Guay Jap.

This dish in Thai alphabet is spelled Gwy jab, but seems to be pronounced Gu-ay Jap. It is basically thick noodles served in a savory gravy like broth. The broth flavor comes mostly from coriander, garlic and scallion.

There are a variety of ingredients that can be added to suit the taste of diner. this list includes hard boiled egg, pork bone, pork, sausage,  blood, and chicken organs. It is a great tasting dish but if you would prefer not to eat some of these things it might be a good idea to have your dictionary handy.

It is normally eaten along with Ba Tawgno,  a small pastry that is formed into an X and fried. It is not sweet, this is the same pastry that is served with the Coffee Bolan from yesterday.

This small Ubon restaurant will serve you herbal teas. Included are chrysanthemum, lemon and more. The chrysanthemum tea has a very interesting flavor and is rumored to have positive health effects on the body.

A satisfying and good tasting breakfast and the cost wasn’t bad too. The serving of Guay Jap 30 Baht, Gaffee Yen 12 Baht, herbal teas 12 Baht and 2 pieces of pastry 5 Baht.

The name of the shop is Jae Nueang Traditional Vietnamese Guay Jap. The locals know it as Guay Jap Thong Neung which basically means Guay Jap 1 of 3 or Guay Jap III.

If you are out in the morning looking for an Ubon Ratchathani restaurant to have something a little different for breakfast you now have a great suggestion for breakfast in Ubon Ratchathani.

If you are living or visiting Ubon Ratchathani you need to eat breakfast too so I am doing a series about places to get breakfast here.

Samchai Restaurant or Rahn Ahan Samchai is an established Ubon Restaurant catering to the morning crowd on their way to work. These people are hungry and in a hurry. The staff at Samchai satisfy them on both counts.

There is a breakfast dish that is known here as Kai Grata or Pan Egg. It is two eggs, sunny side up, cooked and served in a small pan. The eggs are sprinkled with a few herbs and sausage slices. It is normally a set and with the egg dish you also get a small breakfast roll with sausage slices.

I was first introduced to this breakfast no in Ubon Ratchahani but over in Khon Kaen. There was a shop across the street from the hotel I stayed at there. I didn’t know the name so I just pointed at what I wanted and it arrived. I came to just call it the Khon Kaen breakfast.

I really enjoyed it so I went on a quest to find that dish in Ubon. I succeeded and tried 3-4 different shops. Samchai Restaurant was the best for me.

I learned that Kai Grata is a Viet Namese dish that has been adopted in Thailand. From what I have observed it has become popular here as a breakfast.

Samchai is located on Phadaeng Rd across from the Provincial Court building, not too far north of Tung Sri Muang. On some mornings at certain times you might find it a challenge to find a free table. Tables are set up inside the shop as well as on the sidewalk outside.

The service is quick and friendly. After you order within minutes you will have your breakfast sitting in front of you ready to eat. The servers are a well oiled machine that probably came from doing one thing and doing it well for a long time.

If you order the Kai Grata set you will receive eggs and rolls with sausage. They will also ask if you want orange juice with your meal. I also like a glass of Bolan with it. Bolan is syrupy black coffee, usually served in a juice glass. At the bottom of your glass you will see a layer of thick heavy sweet milk. Bolan is also sometimes called Gaffee Dam (Black Coffee) or Gaffee Lao (Laotian Coffee). Bolan is served with with 2 donut type pastry. Mmmmm, Mmmmm, Good.

This is just one option when you are ready for breakfast in Ubon Ratchathani. Samchai is not the only shop that features this dish here in Ubon but it is one of my favorites. The breakfast set with orange juice and Bolan is only 60 Thai Baht.

When you are thinking where to eat just remember Kai Grata and Samchai for your great breakfast in Ubon Ratchahani.

Dim Sum Buffet Promotion Sign

My wife saw a forum post on GuideUbon.com and it looked delicious, so we header over there this afternoon to see how good it is.  The buffet is 99TB per person and drinks are extra. The waiter or waitress will suggest a Thai herbal drink for 25TB. I am not sure what all is in the drink but it does taste good.

There are two tables containing the buffet menu. One has all the dimsum and sarabao on one end. On the other end you will find salad and fruit. The other table holds additional dishes. Today there were spring rolls, fried rice, roasted pork and a few other assorted treats.

The dim sum and sarabao are excellent. There is plenty and its all you can eat so no reason to go away hungry. I would personally prefer a wider selection but for 99TB I couldn’t complain. There is a variety of 5 flavors of dim sum and 5 flavors of sarabao.

There was a good size crowd when we were there but I was the only farang. One reason might be that not many people are aware of this buffet. In the past Ubon International Hotel held a dinner buffet which was great. But it died within a few weeks. I am  not sure why. It might have been too expensive or wasn’t promoted properly.  It began with a good variety and a week before it ended the menu had been condensed considerably.

I would be happy if the dim sum buffet turns out to be a long term affair. I am sure it will be driven by economics. As long as there are enough paying customers to make it profitable it will continue.
